The Pretoria Leg, the biggest and most popular race in the SPAR Women’s Challenge series, which attracts a whopping 25 000 runners each year is now just 1 month away!
The SPAR Women’s Challenge is the most popular and inclusive road race in South Africa, attracting the country’s top professional female athletes and a vast range of recreational runners. The race began in 1999 with just 600 entrants racing along the University of Pretoria’s Groenkloof Campus. Today, over 25,000 entrants from around Gauteng run through Centurion’s streets, starting at SuperSport Park Stadium and looping back along seperate 5km and 10km routes.
Participants include Olympians, top age-group competitors, and many thousands who run for charity and to achieve their own personal goals. An estimated 15 000 spectators turn out in support of the event, along with hundreds of print and broadcast media. The Pretoria race is a key part of the SPAR Grand Prix series – the only competition of its kind in South African road running. It allows outstanding female runners to score points over the series of 5 SPAR Women’s 10km races, and be eligible for cash prizes and other rewards. This has made the Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge into the premier event of the Gauteng road running calendar.
“More than anything else though, this race is about a great day out, a chance for women to take time out for themselves and to come together as a community to support everything that the race is all about,” says SPAR North Rand Marketing Director, Jerome Jacobs. “Community lies at the heart of everything that we do as SPAR and this year we are focusing on that through our 2017 race theme, Better Together.”
According to Jacobs, the growth of the Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the race sponsors or without the close relationship that has been built with Supersport Park Stadium over the years – which is exactly what #BetterTogether is all about. “Our participants are our main focus as we want to ensure an amazing experience for them but this would be impossible without the relationships we have been able to build with our sponsors,” says Jerome. He is of course referring to the 2017 race sponsors and partners; SuperSport Park, City of Tshwane, Jacaranda FM, Athletics Gauteng North, Asics, TradeUnipoint, Aquelle, Futurelife, Mitchum The Capital Hotel, Suzuki, ATKV, Plush, Follicle Hair Atelier, Pieman’s, IMS911, Danone, Bar One, and Starke Ayres .
“SPAR’s main focus has always been to entrench themselves into their immediate communities and to uplift those communities – and what we have found is that the only way to do this is by uniting the community for the betterment of all,” explains Jacobs. Over the years, the SPAR Women’s Challenge has become a strong vehicle for making this happen. “This race really is so close to our hearts because of the good it brings. It’s an amazing sight to see 25 000 women from the SPAR North rand community running side by side but it’s phenomenal to see it and think to yourself that all these people have come together to make a difference,” says Jacobs. “I cannot express enough what this means to us and how much it inspires us to keep putting on a bigger and better race every year.”
As always several local artists will entertain the crowds with live performances at SuperSport Park on race day and will set the stage for the handover of SPAR North Rand’s donations to the race beneficiaries; Irene Homes, The Chrysalis Foundation, Jacaranda Good Morning Angels, Cupcakes 4 Kids With Cancer, the Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation and the Zoleka Mandela Foundation.
