5 Days and Counting till SA’s Most Beautiful Road Race

Pretoria, 31 July 2017: There are only five days left until the Pretoria Leg of the 2017 SPAR Women’s Challenge takes place at SuperSport Park. 25 000 runners are expected to attend so get there early and avoid the crowds before race time.

The Pretoria leg of this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge takes place at Super Sport Park Stadium in Centurion on 5 August with entries for both the 5km and 10km race still available at SuperSport Park this week from 10h00 to 18h00 daily. In the week ahead Super Sport Park Stadium will be a hive of activity as staff prepare for the arrival of the 25 000 participants on the day together vendors, volunteers, staff, entertainment, print and broadcast media and hundreds of spectators. “This event only gets better every year and though we are going to be very busy this week with final preparations, we cannot wait to see the turnout,” says Jerome Jacobs, Marketing Director for SPAR North Rand.

This year SPAR is uniting with the 25 000 runners taking part in the 2017 Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge to prove that together there is nothing we cannot do – under this year’s race theme, #BetterTogether.

SPAR’s belief in working together originates from the vision of its Dutch founder, Adriaan van Well. That original sentiment is as relevant today as it was back then – that we can all benefit by working together. “Our belief in working together with the community is founded on the conviction that our customers are our pillars. Working with our customers is incredibly important to us as this enables us to give back to our community – which is what SPAR is all about,” says Jacobs. “One person can make a true difference but together we have the strength and the ability change the lives of those in our community who need us most. The nationwide interest and participation in this race is inspiring and it all comes together when over 25 000 women run side by side on race day as one big, happy SPAR family.”

Irene Homes, one of the beneficiaries of the race has also been very busy, working furiously to pack the 25 000 goodie bags for the race. Estelle van Schoor, CEO of Irene Homes, said that she – and everyone at Irene Homes – is grateful for the fact that SPAR trusts them to carry out this task year after year and for the huge opportunity for people who are intellectually disabled to be able to work on a special project. “The SPAR Women’s Challenge is a positive and powerful event in the lives of many organisations such as Irene Homes as well as many individuals in our community.”

An event of these proportions is impossible to carry off without a little help and that is where SPAR’s crucial race sponsors and partners come into play. SuperSport Park, City of Tshwane, Jacaranda FM, Athletics Gauteng North, Asics, TradeUnipoint, Aquelle, Plush, Mitchum, Danone, Dairymaid, Starke Ayres, Futurelife, Pieman’s, IMS911, Danone, ATKV, The Capital Hotel, Suzuki and the Isigidi Group proudly support the race.

All of these sponsors came together with SPAR to create a great event, not only for the runners, but for those who stand to benefit from the proceeds of the day as well. A percentage of the proceeds of the race will be divided among SPAR’s 2017 race beneficiaries – Jacaranda Good Morning Angels, The Chrysalis Foundation, Irene Homes, The Zoleka Mandela Foundation, Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer, Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation and Stand With Stan.

All of the SPAR Grand Prix series top runners will be there competing for first place in the second last leg of the series and the chance to move up the ranks in the Grand Prix leader board – with the stakes higher than ever this year as international runners are now eligible to earn points! Several of the runners currently ranking at the top of the leader board will be there to race to first place in the hopes of accumulating more Grand Prix points. Some of the country’s most outstanding runners will be there on race day including Irvette van Zyl, Sonja Laxton, Lebogang Phalula, Charné Bosman, Cornelia Joubert, Rene Kalmer, and Kesa Moletsane – who has been dominating the SPAR Grand Prix leader board so far.

The 2017 brand ambassadors will also be there running right alongside their fans!
